Dosage & Administration

The following dosages are suggestions only. These amounts are based on the average G.P.D. that have been prescribed to current MMAR card holders in our database.

Smoking 1 - 7 G.P.D.
Vaporization 1 - 7 G.P.D.
Edible Marijuana 5 - 20 G.P.D.
G.P.D. =  Grams Per Day

The following forms of administering marihuana are not currently recognized by Health Canada, however there is significant research showing the benefits of using marihuana in the following ways.

Sprays and Tinctures 5 - 20 G.P.D.
Creams, Ointments and Salves 10 - 45 G.P.D.
G.P.D. =  Grams Per Day

* Some patients find it beneficial to combine different forms of administering marihuana. This is permitted by Health Canada simply by ticking off both inhale and oral on the B form.   (As an example: edibles help some people function during the day while smoking helps them ease their pain at night)

Methods of delivery

There are 5 methods of delivery for marihuana

Smoking
Inhalation is the most frequently used method of accessing the medicinal properties of marihuana. The effects are felt within a few minutes, as combustion brings all the Cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds into the bloodstream very quickly.

There are many theories regarding the benefits versus the hazards of smoking cannabis. As there is a multitude of research available supporting both sides, we feel that there is no conclusive evidence one way or the other at this time.

Vaporization
Vaporizers are a great alternative to smoking medical marihuana. The many therapeutic Cannabinoids and other compounds in marihuana can be released into the lungs without burning the plant material thus eliminating the carcinogens associated with smoking. Most vaporizers allow the user to adjust the temperature settings to heat the cannabis to a temperature below combustion, meaning there will be no tar and other carbon based oxidization of materials.

“Since the cannabinoids THC and Cannabidiol (CBD) have both been shown to have cancer-fighting properties, scientists speculate that cannabinoids may have a prophylactic effect against the damage that the tars and other potentially harmful chemicals present in cannabis smoke would otherwise cause.”
Ed Rosenthal.

Edible Marihuana
Although this is the hardest method to measure dosage-wise, it is still popular and has been proven helpful for many patients. As a person can eat way more than they can smoke, one must exercise caution when using this method. Edibles are prepared by blending marihuana into butter or oil although some people bake it directly into food. Care must be taken when starting to use this method, as there are many variables that can influence the end effect. These include the potency, the rate at which the body metabolizes the cannabis, the exact method of preparation and the consistency of cannabis in the preparation. Consuming too much marihuana has been known to cause dizzy spells, light headedness, or long periods of unwanted sleep. This method seems to be more suitable for people with severe muscle spasms, severe chronic pain and spinal cord injuries.

There are other methods of delivery that Health Canada has not yet approved but research has shown that they may be viable options. Spray (Cannamist) / Tincture
Medicinal marihuana can also be taken in liquid concentrate form. This allows for very precise measurements while avoiding the need to inhale cannabis. This can be done by sub-lingual delivery (under the tongue), which bypasses the liver and therefore can be more efficient.

Creams, Ointments and Salves
Some users have been able to make creams or ointments using the oils extracted from the marihuana plant. These creams have been shown to help all sorts of skin disorders from eczema to allergic skin reactions. Some patients even report that using marihuana in a cream form was an effective treatment for joint pain. This could be due to marihuana's anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
